  • New regulations have been implemented in Arkansas as of Jan. 1. The new regulations and permit requirements can be found at: http://www.agfc.com/fishing/rules-regulations-fishing/statewide-limits-fishing.aspx

  • At the regular monthly meeting of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission in August, 10 changes in fishing regulations were approved. These were recommendations from the AGFC’s Fisheries Division staff. The rule changes will go into effect Jan. 1, 2010. Alligator gar are fabled fish in Arkansas but have declined in numbers, but enough are still in some Arkansas rivers so that people go out specifically for them. Many bowfishing enthusiasts often have alligator gar at the top of these priorities. The new regulations will reduce the daily limit from two to one on alligator gar, set a season for taking them and create a permit for alligator gar fishing. The reduction in the daily limit and the other alligator gar rule changes came out of meetings of AGFC fisheries personnel and bowfishing organizations.

  • The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is currently working on developmenet of the Arkansas Alligator Gar Management Plan. It is currently in draft and has been submitted for review and approval.

  • Kayla DiBenedetto has finished her Master's Thesis titled: Life History Characteristics of Alligator Gar, Atracosteus spatula, in the Bayou Dularge Area of Southcentral Louisiana.
  • The Fish America Foundation along with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has funded a fish passage restoration project on the Fourche LaFave River in cooperation with Perry County, Lindsey Lewis of the Arkansas Field Office, and Mitzi Cole with the U.S. Forest Service. This project will improve and maintain alligator gar passage to a documented spawning location. In addition, Jim Baker with the Natural Resources Conservation Service is working to enroll the land at the site in the Wetlands Reserve Program so that the habitat can be restored and maintained permenantly.
  • National Geographic is working with Dr. Allyse Ferrara to film an episode of "Monster Fish". The team is now looking for historical photos, articles, info. about alligator gar. If you have any old photos, articles, or info., please see the following:

To some of the world's best gar researchers, I'm working as the associate producer on a National Geographic television documentary on Alligator Gar. I've already had the privilege of speaking and working with several of you recently - our crew had an amazing shoot recently in TX and LA thanks to the incredible efforts of Dr. Ferrara, Dave Buckmeir, and Chris Kennedy (among others). Currently, we are in the process of editing the film and would very much like to include a historical segment on gar. A crucial part of the story of alligator gar is how they were once considered a "trash" fish and in some areas there were even attempts to systematically eliminate them. To tell this story, we are hoping to show images of historic photos, cartoons, and especially any old newspaper headlines and clippings. I know that many of you have done research in this area and may have some images you would be willing to send, or researchers and resources you could recommend. We are especially looking for some of the more novel or colorful headlines that capture former misconceptions about gar. Thank you in advance for your assistance to us on the project.
