| 2000 | Fred Berry, a teacher and counselor in Yellville-Summit schools, lives within a short distance of Crooked Creek, the renowned smallmouth fishery in northern Arkansas. Fierce controversy has swirled for years around Crooked Creek, gravel mining and access for fishermen. Facilities to teach and demonstrate conservation education to youngsters, senior citizens and everyone in between was on Mr. Berry’s mind when he donated a block of stock valued at $1 million to the Arkansas Game
and Fish Foundation.
The foundation then purchased 421 acres of land along Crooked Creek from one of two landowners involved in court actions because they had erected fences across the creek that impeded fishermen and floaters. The property has three miles of frontage on the creek just outside Yellville, Arkansas. It includes Kelly’s Slab, a well-known landmark for fishermen. The purchase insures public access to this area and the cable across the creek. The objective for Mr. Berry and the foundation is to use the land as a starter for a conservation education center in north Arkansas. |
