Ecosystem Based Approaches to Manage Fisheries
Resources
22th Annual Meeting
12-14 February 2002
Withlacoochee Training Center
Brooksville, Florida
The Florida Chapter of the American Fisheries Society will be hosting a symposium to discuss ecosystem based approaches for managing our fishery resources. In particular, we will be focusing on Marine Protected Areas (MPA) for marine systems, and Habitat Enhancement in freshwater systems.
On May 26, 2000, President Clinton signed and executive order on MPAs to help protect the significant natural and cultural resources within the marine environment for the benefit of present and future generations. It will require that federal, state, and local governments as well as the private sector to work together to implement MPAs. During the MPA portion, scientists and user groups will define MPAs and discuss the pros and cons of MPA establishment for fisheries resource enhancement.
Florida=s freshwater lakes and rivers have undergone habitat alterations due to many factors including changes in hydrology associated with regulation of rivers and lakes. Habitat enhancement efforts have been used to improve degraded aquatic habitat and enhance recreational fisheries. In this session, presenters will describe several habitat enhancement projects in Florida and assess their effects on habitat quality and recreational fisheries.
In addition to invited speakers, there will be a contributed paper session dealing with traditional fisheries topics. Organizers are looking for papers and posters. Papers will be 15‑minutes long, preferably with slides or Power‑Point, and have an additional 5‑minutes for introductions and questions. Posters will be approximately 3' x 4'. Additional information on presentation formats and examples of abstracts can be found at the chapter website (http://nersp.nerdc.ufl.edu/~fafs/).
