Minutes of the 2005 Annual Meeting of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Fisheries Society

January 25, 2005

Carroll Knicely Conference Center, Bowling Green, KY

Western Kentucky University

Opening remarks:

President Ryan Oster welcomed everyone to the meeting and called the meeting to order @ 1:15 p.m.  Twenty Kentucky Chapter members were present for the business meeting.

Business:

Minutes from the 2003 Chapter meeting were passed out and reviewed.

Jeff Crosby gave the treasurer’s report.  The checking account decreased by $1,400 over the past year.  The bank account before this meeting was $6,271.57 dollars.  Since our last meeting, $819.16 had been deposited, including $33.04 in interest.  Expenditures over the past year totaled $2,252.48 including the last KYAFS meeting and the annual hospice event at the Pfeiffer fish hatchery.  Jeff encouraged members of the parent society to pay their chapter dues through the parent society because the parent society pays the chapter a rebate for each paid member.  Jeff indicated before the meeting there were approximately 50 paid members for 2004.

KY Chapter President Report:

President Oster discussed several issues needing to be reviewed by the chapter.

  1. President Oster informed the chapter that the Tennessee Chapter AFS expressed interest in a joint meeting for next year.  The meeting would be held in Tennessee, possibly at a state park near Nashville.  Chapter members expressed the need for this meeting to be near the border so that the majority of membership would have an opportunity to attend.  Dave Dreves made a motion that the chapter pursues a joint meeting with the Tennessee Chapter AFS for next year.  Sherry Harrel seconded the motion. Motion carried.

  2. President Oster informed the chapter that the AFS had contacted him concerning the possibility of the chapter submitting a bid for the 2009 National AFS meeting.  Currently, the membership felt they did not have the manpower to complete such a commitment at this time.

  3. President Oster discussed the need to increase the chapter’s annual dues to $5.00.  After some discussion, Dave Dreves made a motion to increase the chapter dues from $2.00 to $5.00.  Don Bunnell seconded the motion.  Motion carried.

  4. Finally, President Oster discussed the possibility of the chapter adopting a stream.  Dave Dreves made a motion for the chapter to adopt a portion of Elkhorn Creek, Franklin County, Kentucky, near Sullivan Lane Bridge.  Neil Jackson seconded the motion.  Motion carried.  Kerry Prather and Dave Dreves will coordinate any cleanup in this adopted segment of stream.
