2000-2001 President's Annual Work Plan
Southern Division, American Fisheries Society

The 2000-2001 Southern Division President's priorities:

  1. Increase the visibility of the Southern Division internally and externally.
  2. Foster opportunities to promote leadership and mentorship within the Division.
  3. Promote growth and flexibility of the Division's ability to address emerging technical issues.

Annual Work Plan:

The newly revised AFS Strategic Plan was developed to guide Society activities through 2004. It redefined the Mission Statement of AFS in terms of goals that:

"improve the conservation and sustainability of fishery resources and aquatic ecosystems by advancing fisheries and aquatic science and promoting the development of fisheries professionals."

The vision of the revised AFS Strategic Plan recognizes that the mission will be achieved if the Plan's major goals are embraced by all units of AFS. The accompanying elements of the Southern Division President's Work Plan parallel elements of the revised AFS Strategic Plan.

Element 1: Increased Visibility

Goal: To broaden awareness of the Southern Division's services internally and externally through increased communications among chapters and with related scientific organizations in the southeastern United States.

Tasks:

  1. Work to develop collaborative workshops, symposia, and other means of disseminating information such as website linkages between the Southern Division and organizations such as the Southeastern Fishes Council, the Association of Southern Biologists, the Southeastern Chapter of the Ecological Society of America, and the Southeastern Section of The Wildlife Society.
  2. Promote increased communications within the Division regarding Division services. This will be accomplished by travel, conference calls, and email exchanges between Division officers and chapter members.
  3. Encourage all Division chapters and technical committees to develop or expand their Internet presence to give members timely access to information and services.

Element 2: Leadership and Mentorship

Goal: Enhance the professional development of Southern Division members by providing opportunities for leadership training and mentoring interactions.

Tasks:

  1. Provide AFS leadership training for Division members.
  2. Provide opportunities for officers of student sub-chapters to participate at Division EXCOM meetings.
  3. Encourage student sub-chapters to promote opportunities for undergraduate involvement in sub-chapter and chapter activities.
  4. Define Division opportunities for mentorship that enhance connections and exchanges between individuals with extensive fisheries experience and students and young professionals.

Element 3: Growth and Flexibility of the Technical Committee System

Goal: Promote growth and flexibility in the technical committee system to improve the Division's ability to proactively address emerging local, regional, and national fisheries technical issues.

Tasks:

  1. Encourage agency support for technical committees that are issue-driven and product-oriented by working more closely with agency leadership when developing technical committee goals and objectives.
  2. Encourage technical committees to promote opportunities to combine resources to address complex technical issues.
