The Georgia and South
Carolina Chapters of AFS Invite You to the First Midyear of the New
Millennium
Your hosts would like
to welcome you to Savannah, "City of Southern Charm and
Hospitality". The southern division AFS midyear has evolved into an
outstanding forum for exchanging ideas, presenting research results, and
continuing professional development. The meeting will be held at the Hyatt
Regency, located on the scenic waterfront of the Savannah River and
prominently situated in the heart of Savannah's Historic District.
Individuals desiring to
present research and management results and/or progress of ongoing work
are encouraged to submit contributed papers. Technical presentations will
be scheduled for 20 minutes (15 minutes for the presentation and 5 minutes
for question/answer period). Abstracts for presentations and posters,
should be submitted on diskette (Word Perfect, Microsoft Word, or ASCII)
as well as a hardcopy. Please state whether the abstract is for a poster
or a presentation. Abstracts should include (in the following order), the
paper's title, author(s) name(s) and address(es) (including phone, fax,
and e-mail), and text. It is assumed that the first author listed will be
the presenter unless otherwise noted. Students wishing to compete for the
"Student Best Paper Award" should place a superscript asterisk
after their name. The text should be no more than 200 words. State
objective(s), principal results, and conclusions. If the principal contact
person for correspondence regarding the abstract is someone other than the
presenter, please so specify.
Details of the program
will be in the December Southern Division Newsletter. Poster presentations
are encouraged. Posters will be exhibited throughout the meeting and
authors will be available at specific times to discuss their work and
answer questions.

The Hyatt Regency on
the Historic Riverfront is located in the heart of downtown Savannah's
Historic District. Magnificently situated on the waterfront of the
Savannah River, the hotel's location puts you in the midst of everything
Savannah has to offer.
The Hyatt Regency is
located 8 miles from Savannah International Airport. Coastal
Transportation provides shuttle service from the airport to the hotel at
$20.00 round trip.
Reservations can be
made through Hyatt's central reservation system by calling 1-800-233-1234
or by calling the Hotel reservation department directly at 912-238-1234.
Reservations should be made on or before January 12, 2000 to assure room
and rate availability. Tell the hotel associate that you are attending the
AFS meeting to get discounted room rates. Room rates are $109.00 for
single/double occupancy.
The Southern Division and the
Southeastern Fishes Council (SFC) will cosponsor a symposium on Conservation
of Nongame Freshwater Fishes in the Southeast. The symposium will
focus on the current conservation status of nongame freshwater fish in the
Southeast, identify critical research and management needs, and highlight
ongoing programs. A full day of invited speakers is slated for Feb. 5, and
a contributed paper session on Feb 6. If You would like to present a
contributed Paper on nongame fishes please contact Dr. Stephen Walsh at

Also scheduled is a special symposium on Biology
and Management of Reef Fishes. The goal of this symposium is to bring
together reef biologists from the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf states to
exchange ideas on management solutions to fishery problems that are unique
to reef fisheries. Additional information can be obtained by contacting

The Warmwater Streams Technical Committee
is hosting a symposium dealing with Streambank Restoration. The symposium
is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 5, and will have a diversity of geographic
and technical representation. For more information contact Joe Schiller

The AFS Socioeconomics Section will
sponsor a special session on Socioeconomic Consideration in Fisheries
Management. This session will focus on the "tools" and insight
that economists and social scientists can provide when analyzing fishery
management and related issues.
A special session on fishery management
issues unique to South Atlantic Slope Rivers
will be held on Feb. 5. For further information contact Tom Meronek (912)

The Warmwater Streams
Committee will sponsor a ½ day workshop on Geomorphologic Assessment of
River Stability for Restoration. The workshop will provide theory, case
studies, and practical approaches to assessing the state of geomorphologic
stability of rivers and streams. Emphasis will be placed on the tools
needed to diagnose disturbance and to analyze the state of stability of
rivers and streams. The instructor will be Dr. Robert Jacobson, who is a
fluvial geomorphologist with 17 years of experience working for the USGS
on a wide range of projects involving surficial processes and landscape
responses to disturbance. Registration fee for this workshop is $40.00.
A student workshop will
be held Friday afternoon, Feb. 6. The workshop will help students prepare
for jobs and/or graduate school. Topics to be covered include resumes,
interview skills, and professional insight.
A full day workshop
will be conducted on marine reef fish aging. The goal of the workshop is
to examine aging techniques of reef fishes so as to increase consistency
in reef fish aging across the Southeast. The workshop will be limited to
25 participants. Instructors are Pat Harris, Marine Resources Research
Institute, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, Charleston,
South Carolina and Gary Fitzhugh, National Marine Fisheries Service,
Panama City, Florida. Registration fee for this workshop is $30.00.
A half day workshop
will be conducted on Communications in Fisheries Management. The course
will explore public perceptions and attitudes towards fisheries management
activities and techniques to improve communications and resolve potential
conflicts. The instructor will be Mark Duda, Executive Director of
Responsive Management. Mark has conducted more than 250 surveys and 200
focus groups on opinions and attitudes toward fish, wildlife, natural
resources, outdoor recreation and the environment. Registration fee for
this workshop is $40.00.
