SECOND AND FINAL CALL FOR CONTRIBUTED PAPERS

This announcement is the second and final call for contributed papers and posters to be presented in technical sessions at the meeting.  Individuals desiring to present research and management results or progress with ongoing studies are encouraged to submit abstracts.  We especially encourage students to contribute papers as platform presentations or posters.

Presentations will be scheduled for 20 minutes, 15-minute presentation followed by 5-minute question/answer period.  Moderators will encourage a lively discussion during the 5-minute period after each presentation.  Moderators will strictly enforce the time limit.  Slides projectors (2”x2”) will be available.  Individuals wishing to use computer projectors must supply, setup, and maintain the equipment themselves.

Poster presentations are also encouraged and will be exhibited throughout the meeting.  Authors will be available to talk about their work and answer questions.

The deadline for submitting abstracts for all contributed papers and posters is 15 October 2000.  Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail attachments or diskette (WordPerfect, Word, or ASCII).  Indicate on abstract if this is a poster or platform presentation.  Abstracts should include (in the following order), the paper's title, author’s name(s), address(es), phone and fax number(s), e-mail address(es), and text.  It will be assumed that the first author listed will be the presenter unless otherwise noted.  Students wishing to compete for the "Student Best Paper Award" should indicated so with a superscripted asterisk after their name.  The text should be a 200-word or less statement of objectives, principal results, and conclusions.  If the principal contact person for correspondence regarding the abstract is someone other than the presenter, please so specify.

Abstracts should be submitted to Mike Allen and Debra Murie, Co-chairs, Program Committee, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, The University of Florida, 7922 NW 71st Street, Gainesville, FL 32653 (352) 392-9617 ex 252 (MA) or ex 245 (DM), msal@gnv.ifas.ufl.edu, or dmurie@ufl.edu.

Authors will be notified regarding acceptance of their presentation in early November 2000.  The final program, pre-registration, and other information will be distributed in a separate mailing, in the Winter Southern Division Newsletter, and on the Southern Division and Florida Chapter web pages.

Fisheries Management: Socioeconomic Considerations: Ray Rhodes (SCDNR, rhodesr@mrd.dnr.state.sc.us) is organizing this symposium

Fish Attracting Devices (FADS): Science and Management Issues: This symposium is being organized by Randy Edwards (USGS, redwards@usgs.gov), Ken Sulak (USGS, ken_sulak@usgs.gov), and Doug Weaver (USGS, doug_weaver@usgs.gov).

Setting the Limits: Bag and Size Regulations in Coastal Marine Fisheries:  Contact Mike Murphy (FMRI, Mike.Murphy@fwc.state.fl.us) or Bob Muller (FMRI, muller_r@harpo.dep.state.fl.us) for more information on this symposium.

This is the current list of symposia and special sessions.  There may be others so you should check the Southern Division’s and Florida Chapter’s web pages for the latest details.

Workshops

We have planned several workshops for Friday 23 February.  These workshops will count toward Professional Development Quality Points to be used for maintaining your AFS Certified Fisheries Scientist credentials.  Some of these will be certified for Continuing Education Credits.  The final cost and other details are not available yet.  Look for more information in a separate mailing, the Winter SDAFS Newsletter, or check the Southern Division’s or the Florida Chapter’s web pages.

The Instream Flow Committee is sponsoring a half-day workshop on Development of Instream Flow Programs in Southeast States.  The Instream Flow Council has sponsored a project that reviewed current state approaches and has recommended a broader river system approach.  Recommendations for policies for a successful instream flow program will be discussed and acceptable methodologies for determining instream flow will be presented.  Professionals need to consider items such as riparian maintenance, stream channel maintenance, and flood plain needs and this workshop will provide guidance on how to do so.

Dr. William Seaman, Florida Sea Grant College Program, has proposed a half-day workshop entitled Artificial Reef Evaluation: Criteria and Methods for Documenting Performance in Southern Seas.  The purpose is to educate attendees on interdisciplinary methods to document performance of artificial reefs in coastal and oceanic waters. Topics include global reef development purposes and practices, design of reef studies, data analysis, the toolbox of engineering, ecological and socio-economic methods, and practical examples of reef evaluation in five fishery and habitat management situations. The format includes illustrated presentations, discussion, and hands-on worksheet exercises.

Allan Collins, NMFS, Luiz Barbieri, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and David Wyanski, South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, are developing a full-day workshop on The Use of Histological Methods in Studies of Fish Reproduction:  Study Design, Interpretation of Sections, and Data Analysis.  The objectives are to hold a workshop for biologists along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States that are working on studies of fish reproduction, the results of which are used primarily in fish stock assessments.  The workshop will provide a venue for biologists to evaluate histological methods (tissue processing and interpretation of sections), and discuss difficulties encountered in conducting studies of fish reproduction.

The Warmwater Streams Committee is developing a half-day workshop on Conflict Resolution in Fishery Management.  The workshop will cover information on the proper methods to resolve conflicts concerning multiple uses of natural resources.  The Committee is planning on having a nationally known expert present a workshop that will include examples from areas such as hydropower, fish management, and endangered species.

The Small Impoundments Committee is organizing a workshop entitled Urban Fishing Program Techniques.  Dr. Tony Fedler will include information on Urban fishing program goals, objectives, and issues, identification of program markets and market research methods, program design and evaluation methods, and methods for building and expanding programs.

AFS LEADERSHIP TRAINING

AFS President Carl Burger plans to emphasize leadership during his tenure, and is reinstating the AFS leadership training.  Leadership training will be available Friday afternoon 23 February.  The training is open to chapter officers, committee members, and others interested in AFS leadership positions.  However, it isn’t just for AFS officers.  You can take the principles back to your job and life.

Student aid will be available for the SDAFS Midyear Meeting.  The SDAFS Student Affairs Committee will have a block of rooms available for students.  If you are interested in a free room, contact Bill Ensign, Dept. of Biological and Physical Sciences, Kennessaw State University, Kennessaw, GA 30144, (770) 499-3505, bensign@kennesaw.edu for requirements and an application.  Registration waivers will also be available for students working at the meeting, e.g. running a projector for a session or helping at the registration/information booth.  Students interested in working at the meeting should contact Tom Glancy, Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, The University of Florida, 7922 NW 71st Street, Gainesville, FL 32653 (352) 392-9617 ex 236, tglancy@ufl.edu.

There will be a free student workshop on Friday 23 February.  Jeff Hill from the University of Florida is working on the program.  He would appreciate any suggestions.  Jeff can be contacted at the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, The University of Florida, 7922 NW 71st Street, Gainesville, FL 32653 (352) 392-9617 ex 236, jcichla@ufl.edu.  You will find more information in the Winter SDAFS Newsletter and on the Southern Division’s and Florida Chapter’s web pages.
