AFS members,
My name is John Sweka
and I am a graduate student at West Virginia University. I am also a
member of the AFS Southern Division Student Affairs committee and I am
contacting you to let you know about the Student-Mentor Luncheon at the
upcoming Mid-Year meeting in Little Rock.
We held this luncheon
for the first time at last year's meeting and it was a big success (See
Presidient's Hook in the April 2001 issue of Fisheries). Basically, this
luncheon pairs students and professionals for lunch (at the professional's
expense). They are free to discuss what they want but advice on job
hunting, courses and experience employers are interested in, involvement
in AFS activities, student research, etc., are appropriate. Professionals
are then encouraged to introduce the student to other professionals at the
meeting and follow up with the student after the meeting regarding
research and job placement.
Students and mentors
will be paired during the Friday evening social. At this time they can
make plans on where and when to meet for lunch on Saturday. If you are
interested in participating in the luncheon, and willing to treat a
student to lunch, please contact me (jsweka@wvu.edu)
or Stuart Welsh (Student Affairs Committee Chair swelsh@wvu.edu).
Thank you,
John
