Introduction to GIS Applications in Fisheries Science

This course will cover the fundamentals of GIS data systems with a focus on the application of GIS to Fisheries Science.  The course will include hands on exercises using ESRI’s ArcExplorer package, which is available for free from ESRI.  Hands-on exercises will be used throughout the course so attendees can become more familiar with the topics covered.

This course will include

·        An introduction to GIS theory and methodology

·        A review of available software packages and data types, their functionality, and the pros and cons of each

·        A list of sources for obtaining GIS data

·        Using GIS to display data that are stored in a separate database (like Access or ORACLE)
