Continuing Education Workshop on Power Analysis
American Fisheries Society, NC Chapter
February 6,
2002, 1pm – 4:30pm
McGuire
Operations Center, Huntersville NC
Conducted by
Don Holbert PhD, Professor of Biostatistics,
School of
Allied Health Sciences, East Carolina University
Workshop
Outline:
- What is Power Analysis,
and why is it important to conduct a Power Analysis? (this will be
discussed in the setting of the more commonly applied statistical
procedures, including paired and independent samples t-tests, comparing 2
or more independent proportions, one-way ANOVA, and simple linear
regression).
- What inputs do I need to
conduct a Power Analysis at the planning stages of a study?
- What types of calculations
are involved in calculating the power of a statistical test?
- What are the different
ways of displaying answer(s) to the question “What power does the proposed
study have?”
- What software is available
to conduct Power Analysis calculations and display them in a
user-friendly way? (PASS, Statistica, Power and
Precision)
- Some examples of where
Power Analysis might be used in the setting of Fisheries/Field Biology.
7. What are my
analysis options when analyzing data from an under-powered study?
