On August 30, 2007, the Student Chapter Co-hosted our
annual fish fry and membership drive with the Wildlife Society. The food
was good, the company was great, and the weather was cooperative. We have
great things in store for the next year, come join us!

be taking a behind the scenes trip through the aquarium in Jenks, OK.

Spring Meeting, February 8-12, 2006
|
|

|
Several Subunit members went to the Southern
Division, AFS Spring Meeting in San
Antonio, TX.
The Subunit supported meeting registration and lodging for undergraduates
Jeff Fore and Jared Vanderpool. Thus, they
were able to learn about current fisheries research in the southeastern US,
make contacts regarding jobs and graduate school, and meet other fisheries
students and professionals.

ZoGGS Lunchtime Seminar, February 6th, 2006

As has been done the last several years, the OSU Student
Subunit gave a presentation during the Zoology Graduate Student Society's
Lunchtime Seminar series. The Subunit's presentation titled 'Aquatic
Issues in Oklahoma'
was given to faculty and students during the lunch hour, and outlined
current water development, invasive and introduced species, and fish kill issues.
The Subunit also served gumbo, cornbread, and sweet tea for lunch.
The presentation helped fulfill the mission of AFS by bringing awareness of
current issues regarding Oklahoma's
aquatic resources, and getting undergraduates involved conducting research
and presenting that research in an oral fashion.

January 23rd, 2006

On January 23rd, 2006, Kurt Kuklinski
was invited for a seminar by the OSU Student Subunit during a monthly
meeting of the OSU Student
Chapter of The Wildlife Society. Kurt is a Fisheries
Biologist/Analyst in the Fishery Research Laboratory (FRL), Oklahoma Department of Wildlife
Conservation. He talked about the history of the FRL, and the
research and management they conduct on Oklahoma's fisheries. Kurt also
talked about internship, employment, and graduate school opportunities.

In October, the OSU Student Subunit participated in the
Payne County Audubon Society's Nature Day at Sanborn
Lake in Stillwater, OK.
Aquaria with native and introduced fishes were set up for display. We
helped the public, both adults and children, with fish ID, and informed
them about fishes, aquatic resources, and AFS.

On August 31, 2005, the Student Chapter Co-hosted our annual
fish fry and membership drive with the Wildlife Society. We were able to
feed the hungry and recruit 20 additional fishheads
to AFS. A good time was had by all.

Wildlife Expo

On August 27-28, 2005, the Student Chapter participated
in the Wildlife Expo at Guthrie
City Lake.
We demonstrated boat electrofishing and trap
netting to anglers and sportsmen from across Oklahoma.

ZoGGS Lunchtime Seminar, February, 2005

In February the Student Chapter gave a seminar at OSU on
imperiled fishes and aquatic invertebrates in Oklahoma. We also served gumbo as a
fundraiser. About 20 people in attendance.

Zoology Departmental Seminar, October, 2004
|
|
|
In October the Student Chapter hosted Chris Racey for a zoology departmental seminar. Chris is a
research associate at the University
of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Chris's seminar topic was on
the ecological value of the lower White River.

In October the Student Chapter participated in the Payne
County Audubon Society's Nature Day at Sanborn
Lake in Stillwater, OK.
We displayed several native and introduced species that can be found
locally in streams and reservoirs in aquariums, and answered questions
regarding fish identification and ecology. We also distributed fish posters
and stickers, handed out information on AFS, and displayed some common
fishery gears.

Earth Day, April 22, 2004

On April 22, 2004 we participated in Oklahoma State
University's Earth
Day celebration. We sold a few T-shirts and handed out pamphlets that
describe who we are and what activities we participate in each year.

9th ANNUAL FISHERIES TECHNIQUES DEMONSTRATION

The Oklahoma Student Chapter of the American Fisheries
Society sponsored the 9th Annual Fisheries Techniques Demonstration on
March 27, 2004. This year’s demonstration was held on the Illinois
River and at Spring Creek. A total of 45 students from Oklahoma State
University, Southeastern
Oklahoma State
University, and Northeastern Oklahoma
State University
attended the event. In the morning, Dr. William Fisher from the Oklahoma
Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit conducted a review of electrofishing and boating safety.

One of the Highlights of the day was a demonstration of hoopnetting by Jason Schaffler
and how not to drive a boat up and down the Illinois
River.
|
|

|
|
There was also a very interesting and informative
discussion by Randy Hyler, ODWC’s
Northeast Region Streams Biologist, about issues affecting fisheries
management on Northeastern Oklahoma Streams and channel stabilization
Structures.
Participants also had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with
boat electrofishing, otolith
and scale removal, tagging with Floy t-bar and
dart tags, and diet analysis.

At Spring Creek, stuents
enjoyed to variety of small stream fishes captured with the electric seine
as well as several water snakes.
Participants also had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with
invertebrate sorting and identification, mapping stream habitats using GPS
technology, and measuring discharge.
|
|

|
|
Most importantly, lunch was enjoyed by all. Thanks to
the cooks.

Southern Division Spring Annual Meeting

The Student Chapter helped organize student workers at
the 2004 Southern Division AFS meeting in Oklahoma City, OK.
We also helped design and sold the meeting T-shirt. We have a few left. If

introduced fishes in Oklahoma
during one of the OSU Zoology Graduate Student Society's Lunchtime Seminar
Series. We also served fish etouffee and raised a
few dollars.

In November the Student Chapter held a joint meeting
with the Oklahoma Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society, where we invited
Bill Wentroth of the Oklahoma Department
of Wildlife Conservation to give a seminar on contrasts between wildlife
and fisheries management in Oklahoma.

We displayed some redear sunfish, bluegill,
smallmouth bass, blue catfish, and other Oklahoma fish species in aquariums, and
answered questions regarding fish identification and ecology. We also
distributed fish posters and stickers, handed out information on AFS, and
displayed some common fishery gears. One little girl couldn't have enouth fun in our hoopnet
(despite her mother's concerns).

Members of the student chapter participated in Oklahoma State University's
Earth Day celebration on April 22, 2003 by setting up an informational
table along side other student groups.

8th ANNUAL FISHERIES TECHNIQUES DEMONSTRATION

The 8th annual fisheries techniques demonstration was
held on April 5, 2003 at Lake Carl Blackwell, near Stillwater, OK.
Over 40 participated in the event, including students from Oklahoma State
University and Northeastern State
University. Both
field and laboratory techniques were demonstrated allowing students to gain
hands on experience with the latest fisheries techniques.

In the morning, Dr. William Fisher from the Oklahoma
Cooperative fish and Wildlife Reserach Unit
conducted a review of electrofishing and boating
safety. Students were also given opportunities to bait electrofish,
set and picu up trap nets, seine, and use a backback electrofisher. Jason
Schaffler demonstrated how to collect larval
fishes. Joe George from Stillwater Marine talked about boat and trailer manintenance. After lunch, Bill Wentroth
from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation talked about
fisheries management on Lake Carl Blackwell. Fish collected from morning
sampling were used to demonstrate otolith and
scale removal and fish age and growth, larval fish and zooplankton
identification, and fish tagging; GIS and GPS technologies were also
discussed.

Lunchtime Seminar Series

The Oklahoma Student Chapter held a lunchtime seminar at
Oklahoma State University
entitled "Pinchin' tails and suckin' heads: is that all there is to crayfish?"
The seminar covered basic crayfish biology and ecology. Members also served
lunch which included caryfish etouffee,
cornbread muffins, and iced tea. Bob DiStefano
from the Missouri Department of Conservation contributed information and
pictures for the seminar.

Wildlife Conservation to give a seminar on Oklahoma's stream management program.

Members of the student chapter participated in Payne
County Audobon Society's Nature Day on October
13, 2002 at the Sanborn Lake Facility in Stillwater. We collected fish from local
streams and set up a fish ID station. Thanks to all of our members who helped
collecting fish and working at the station!

Kids Fishing Clinic

Children ages 12 and under were invited to attend a free
fishing clinic sponsored by the Student Subunit of the Oklahoma Chapter of
the American Fisheries Society. This event was held at the youth fishing
pond at Lake Carl Blackwell. The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife
Conservation and Student OKAFS members provided instruction on casting,
knot tying, fish identification and angler ethics, as well as rods and
reels to those who could not bring their own equipment.

Fish Fry

The Student Chapter hosted a Fish Fry/Membership Drive on
September 4, 2002. Despite a thunderstorm, everyone enjoyed the meal and we
signed up about 10 new members.
