OSU Student Subunit of the American Fisheries
Society's
Annual Fisheries Techniques Demonstration
Each year our Techniques
Demonstration provides Oklahoma
students with hands-on experience with equipment and methods routinely used
in the fisheries profession. The event is held at a different location in Oklahoma each year so participants can experience
sampling in different habitats and see new fish species, as well as enjoy a
variety of Oklahoma’s
scenic lakes and rivers. We invite fisheries professionals
familiar with each location to attend and share management issues and
concerns in the area. Recent locations of the Techniques Demonstration
include Lake Eufaula,
Lake Texoma,
Spring Creek and Illinois River, and Lake
Carl Blackwell. Techniques demonstrated at these events include: electrofishing, seining, gill netting, invertebrate
sampling, mark-recapture methods, otolith removal
and aging, and water quality analyses. For a review of last year's techniques
demo, see our recent events.
The
13th Annual Fisheries Techniques
Demonstration will be held in Stillwater,
Oklahoma at Lake McMurtry
on March 29, 2008.

10th ANNUAL FISHERIES TECHNIQUES DEMONSTRATION
April 2, 2005
Lake Carl Blackwell
Stillwater, Oklahoma
|
|
|
The OSU Student Subunit of the American Fisheries
Society sponsored the 10th Annual Fisheries Techniques Demonstration on April
2, 2005. The event was held on Lake Carl Blackwell. Lake Carl Blackwell is
located about 10 miles West of Stillwater on state highway 51. The event
was attended by approximately 50 students from Oklahoma
State University
and Northeastern
State University.
We demonstrated boat electrofishing, trapnetting, seining, diet analysis, age and growth,
and zooplankton collection among other things, and also served burgers for
lunch.

7th ANNUAL FISHERIES TECHNIQUES DEMONSTRATION
April 2002
|

|
|
The Oklahoma Student Chapter of the American Fisheries
Society sponsored the 7th Annual Fisheries Techniques Demonstration on
April 6, 2002. In the morning, Dr. William Fisher from the Oklahoma
Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit conducted a review of electrofishing and boating safety. This year’s
demonstration was held at Fountainhead
State Park on Lake Eufala, Oklahoma’s largest reservoir. A total
of 52 students from Oklahoma State University,
Southeastern Oklahoma State
University, and Northeastern Oklahoma State
University attended
the event.
|
|

|
|
One of the Highlights of the day was a demonstration
of hydroacoustic and trawling equipment by Jeff
Boxrucker and Greg Summers from the Oklahoma
Department of Wildlife Conservation (ODWC)’s Fisheries Research
Laboratory.
|
|

|
|
There was also a very interesting and informative
discussion by Garland Wright, ODWC’s Central
Region supervisor, about issues affecting fisheries management on Lake Eufaula.
Participants also had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with
boat electrofishing, trapnetting,
otolith removal, anchor and visual implant elastomer tagging, and diet analysis.
This event would not have been possible without the participation of
Oklahoma AFS members: Jeff Boxrucker, Tony Echelle, Daniel Fenner,
Bill Fisher, Matt Mauck, Tim Patton, Cliff
Sager, Jason Schaffler, Jim Schooley,
Greg Summers, Maureen Walsh, Dana Winkelman,
and Garland Wright.

6th ANNUAL FISHERIES TECHNIQUES DEMONSTRATION
March 2001,
|

|
|
The 6th annual fisheries techniques demo was held on
March 31, 2001 at the University
of Oklahoma biological station on Lake Texoma. Over 20 participated in the event,
including students from Oklahoma State University,
the University of Oklahoma, and Southeastern Oklahoma
State University.
Both field and laboratory techniques were demonstrated, allowing students
to gain hands on experience with the latest fisheries techniques.
In the morning, Randy Curry and Robert Wichers
from the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation’s South Central
Fisheries Office provided a demonstration of boat electrofishing
and useful information on communicating with the public. Dr. William Fisher
from the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit conducted a
review of electrofishing and boating safety.
After fish were sampled, they were brought to shore and techniques such as
diet analysis, otolith and scale removal, and
tagging were discussed. Many of the students gained hands-on experience
with these techniques for the first time.
|
|

|
|
Lunch was provided free of charge to all participants.
Everyone appeared to be satisfied, even though Jason Remshardt
was flipping the burgers. After lunch, students were given a demonstration
of trap nets and then split up into two groups. One group was sent out to
pull up gill nets set out the night before; and the other group
participated in an electric seine, minnow seine, and backpack electrofishing demonstration.
In the afternoon, students were sent to the lab where Dr. Dana Winkelman from the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and
Wildlife Research Unit gave a presentation on age and growth. Otoliths and scales from the field and sectioned otololiths were examined in the lab. Also, students
were allowed to examine fish stomach contents and zooplankton collected in
the field.

This event is held at a different location each year to
allow students from other universities to participate. Previous locations
include Lake Tenkiller,
Spring Creek and Lake Carl Blackwell. If anyone has recommendations for next year’s demonstration we would be glad to
hear from you.
Fisheries fun was had by all and we would like to thank everyone
mentioned above as well as the following people for their help in making
this event possible: Cliff Sager, Maureen Walsh, Tim Patton, Richard Page
(UOBS), Kelly Brown (UOBS) and Donna Cobb (UOBS).
