Missouri donated 37,000 juvenile channel catfish to hurricane relief. Mississippi Dept. of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks hauled them to their new home in Mississippi the last week of March. On April 2, 2007 a marathon session at the state fish hatchery in Meridian, Mississippi, was held … clipping adipose fins from all of these fish (party of 10 “clippers”). A good time was had by all. The fish went to the Pascagoula River later that week.
The storm slammed the freshwater fisheries down south. According to Don Jackson, assessments indicate that principal fisheries resources were virtually wiped out. A few thousand catchable size channel catfish were stocked earlier this year. Those larger fish are really helping to reconnect folks to the rivers and to the fishing. The stocked fish are contributing between 30% and 50+% to the catch. We are making it happen with the help of colleagues nationwide!! - Please note that the Distribution Center will stop accepting donations as of 1 May 2007.
