Sampling Shad in Southern
Impoundments

Creed for New Reservoir Committee Members

This creed is intended to insure that any party who wishes to join the Southern Division Reservoir Committee, but is from outside Southern Division (particularly north of Kentucky), will understand the heritage of the Reservoir Committee and will be sympathetic to views shared by this Southern fisheries group.

Please read aloud the following prior to joining the Southern Division Reservoir Committee.

I hereby acknowledge that:

1. Gizzard shad and other Dorosoma spp. are inherently good, in all ways, despite the misconceptions of those north of the state of Kentucky.  
2. “Middle-out” is a fantasy. It occurs only in the imagination of pseudo-managers unable to whip their shad populations into shape through proven approaches such as partial poisoning, drawdowns, predator introductions, harvest control, and renovation.  
3. Gizzard shad are an important and irreplaceable component of southern reservoirs and are essential for proper management of largemouth bass, striped bass, crappies, and any other predator, from the North American continent or elsewhere, that we may introduce into our beloved southern systems.  
4. I will advance the blue-water, white-death concept, and work to promote rotenone sampling in states found north of Kentucky.  
5. Fishery problems in reservoirs can usually be addressed with the use of fish toxins, introductions (fish and/or plant), herbicides, dredge efforts, and the use of water-level or other whole-lake manipulations. In cases where the above methods do not work, we recommend that strict harvest regulations be enacted on all species.  
6. The use of closed seasons on sportfish populations originated from people who do not like the Andy Griffith Show

I will gladly join the Reservoir Committee without reservation in regards to the above statements.
