The Texas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society is committed to the conservation, development, and wise utilization of recreational and commercial fisheries, promotional of all branches of fisheries science and practice, and exchange and dissemination of knowledge about fish, fisheries, and related subjects.

Award applications are being accepted for the Clark Hubbs Student Research Award. The Clark Hubbs Student Research Fund provides for one award annually for up to $500 in support of student research in any aspect of fisheries science. All materials must be received by the Committee Chair no later than December 10, 2009. For more information, click here.

Edward "Ed" William Bonn, passed away on October 5, 2009. Ed was a Fishery Biologist for Texas Parks & Wildlife for 35 years, where he was the State of Texas Striped Bass project leader. He later ran 3-B Enterprises as a consulting Biologist for 12 years. He was the founding president of Texas Chapter American Fisheries Society, Emeritus member: American Institute Fishery, research finalist: Texas Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame, author of numerous scientific journals and papers including: “Culture & Propagation of Striped Bass & their Hybrids”, “Annotated list of fishes of Lake Texoma, Oklahoma & Texas”, Effects of Rotenone on Municipal Water Supplies”, “Effects of Hydrogen Sulfide on Channel Catfish”. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 9, 2009 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Father Stephen J. Mocio officiating. Interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel with Deacon Howard Palms officiating. Family visitation will follow the rosary.

Alan Gatewood Wenger passed away unexpectedly on September 22, 2009, vacationing in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. He was 74 years old. Alan married Maxine McLendon on August 19, 1967. Maxine passed away on June 13, 1973. On August 15, 1979, Alan married his beloved wife, Shobha Seth Wenger, and they recently celebrated their thirtieth wedding anniversary. Alan is also survived by his son Douglas H. Wenger and wife Rayma; daughter Sujata Chaudhary; brother Paul C. Wenger, Jr. and wife Barbara of San Antonio; as well as numerous relatives and friends. Alan was born in San Antonio, and attended Alamo Heights schools from kindergarten through high school graduation. Alan loved nature and the outdoors, pursuing and earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and a Master of Arts degree in Zoology from The University of Texas at Austin. He subsequently worked for many years as a marine biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in the Houston area. In retirement, Alan focused a great deal on service to the community volunteering with organizations such as Armand Bayou Nature Center, Special Olympics, and the Association for Retarded Citizens. He was happiest when he was helping people. We have lost our loving father, brother, husband, uncle, cousin, and friend. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Alan's name to Armand Bayou Nature Centre, Special Olympics, or the Association for Retarded Citizens. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 pm on Friday, October 16th, at Hope Village, 15403 Hope Village Road, Friendswood, TX 77546.
