J., Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, Jasper, Texas 75951 A new and highly invasive aquatic plant species, Salvinia molesta (Mitchell) or Giant Salvinia, was discovered in Houston, Texas, in the spring of 1998. Distribution through October 1999 has been confirmed in 2 public reservoirs, 3 streams and approximately 30 private ponds, primarily across the eastern half of the state. Public education efforts as well as Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies have been implemented to halt the plant's spread. A threat to the state's aquatic resources exists.
